As he travelled, <em>Jeedara<\/em> met two <em>wanchilya<\/em>, dolphins, as told by the women, and two <em>djulea<\/em>, penguins, as told by the men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Just west of <em>Biddy Ngandan Wal<\/em> is Wandilla Bay and <em>wandilda <\/em>is our name for porpoise, a relative of <em>wanchilya<\/em> the dolphin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/whaledreaming.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wanchillar-1-1024x446.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-701\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whaledreaming.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wanchillar-1-1024x446.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/whaledreaming.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wanchillar-1-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/whaledreaming.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wanchillar-1-768x335.jpg 768w, https:\/\/whaledreaming.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wanchillar-1.jpg 1477w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wookatha is <em>Wardu<\/em>, Wombat Country, though <em>Wengel<\/em> is the Mirning name specific to the rare seacoast southern hairy-nosed wombat (<em>Lasiorhinus latifrons<\/em>), which is the smallest of the three species of wombat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Wengel<\/em> is unique to this part of Australia, living in small, isolated populations, and is listed as \u2018near threatened\u2019 on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN 2014). <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/40555\/21959203\" target=\"_blank\">Lasiorhinus latifrons (Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat) (iucnredlist.org)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With colonisation came the European rabbits and their rapidly exploding populations. They competed for food and burrows and brought diseases, such as mange, which drastically affected wombat populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last major survey on the Nullarbor Plain in Western Australia was in the 1980s and raised concerns of their extinction in the west, as they found almost no evidence of wombats being present.
